Who we are

Adolfo Ibáñez University, CSIRO Chile and Data Observatory formed a strategic alliance to develop a revolutionary project using the Open Data Cube for land and marine satellite monitoring of Chile.

CSIRO Chile is the first international subsidiary of CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation); Australia’s scientific research agency and one of the 10 most important research organizations in the world. It was established 100 years ago by the Australian Government and currently has more than 5,500 employees in 60 centers in Australia and around the world.

CSIRO Chile, with more than 12 years of experience, is committed to working to generate a significant impact on the productivity of the Chilean economy, through the transfer of knowledge and technological development applied to Mining, Aquaculture, Water and Land management, Natural Disasters and Social License to Operate.

Adolfo Ibáñez University (UAI) is higher education institution with great national and international prestige. Since 2019, it is one of the four founding members of Data Observatory, an initiative that it promotes through its Faculty of Engineering and Sciences, with the aim of leading training and research in data science in both its technological and public policy applications. This approach is also integrated in the training of students in a cross-cutting manner and contributes to the development of specialized human capital to face the new challenges of a complex and uncertain world.

The participation of the UAI in the DO is a key axis, since the future of science, technology and the way in which new scenarios such as the climate or health crisis are addressed at a global level will depend on the capacity we develop to process and store large amounts of data, as well as to make decisions based on them. The DO will involve growth at the academic, student, multidisciplinary research and technology transfer levels at UAI.

The Data Observatory is a public-private-academia collaboration led by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, and the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism. Its mission is to acquire, store, process, analyze and make available high volume and quality datasets to contribute to the development of knowledge, science, technology and innovation, thanks to data science and artificial intelligence, in areas such as astronomy, climate change, seismic activity, availability of water resources and other activities or sources relevant to the country.

Collaborators

The initial partnership to develop the Data Cube prototype was funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Data Observatory, within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation APEC Forum framework.
